In The Shop – Year In Review: The 2019 HODINKEE Shop Round-Up
This was a remarkable year for the HODINKEE Shop team. Not only did we introduce more of the watches and watch accessories that you know and love, we also added multiple new brands to our authorized retailer list, a new product category courtesy of our longtime relationship with Leica Camera, and more limited edition watches and Shop exclusives than ever before. With the end of 2019 – and the decade – in sight, we wanted to take a moment to look back at the watches and products that defined the year and made it our most memorable yet.
Enjoy, and see you next year!
The Best Value Propositions Of The Year
We started 2019 out in a big way by introducing the Seiko Alpinist U.S. Limited Edition with a blue dial and the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph back-to-back in February. Each of these watches made a huge impact on social media and in the watch industry at large, resulting in two of the most popular timepieces we’ve offered since launching the HODINKEE Shop seven years ago.
The tone these two watches set for 2019 blends affordability with deep enthusiast appeal and it influenced a number of other Shop additions that were of particular note to our readers this year. Later releases, like the Seiko “Sumo” and Seiko “Monster” watches, in the Prospex line, and the Seiko SPB111 with a rich green enamel dial, from the Presage collection, were added to the Shop this fall, highlighting the distinct value proposition of the Japanese brand.
On the other end of the dive watch spectrum, the addition of the Zodiac brand to the HODINKEE Shop introduced another voice in the genre of sensibly priced sports watches. The many Super Sea Wolf watches we have stocked since then, highlighted by our recent Shop exclusive Super Sea Wolf GMT, continue to charm our entire team. Later in the year, we added four Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanicals, one of which featured a black PVD case and was exclusive to the HODINKEE Shop for a short period.
The Limited Edition Watches Of 2019
On the limited edition front, we started 2019 with the IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Edition “HODINKEE” that featured archetypal pilot watch styling in a smaller case size and an innovative, ceramic-based case material. Over the summer, we went from the air to the sea with two dive watch releases, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five Limited Edition for HODINKEE and the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Limited Edition for HODINKEE.
Things didn’t slow down from there, as we continued in the fall with the Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph Limited Edition for HODINKEE that included a top-of-the-line chronograph movement from Minerva as well as an all-inclusive trip to Switzerland to visit the Minerva manufacture in Villeret. As we’ve done the past three years, November was Swatch season at HODINKEE HQ, with the reveal of the SWATCH SISTEM51 GENERATION 1986. Just a few weeks after that, we announced our second ever collaboration with NOMOS Glashütte, the Tangente Sport Limited Edition for HODINKEE.
While the above are unfortunately no longer available, two other Shop exclusive releases, the Zenith El Primero Revival G381 Limited Edition from this year, with its incredible 51-year warranty, and the TAG Heuer Autavia Calibre Heuer 02 for HODINKEE “Orange Boy” from 2018 are still available for purchase.
Exciting New Partners
The latest brands to join the HODINKEE Shop in 2019 include some of the largest firms in the industry as well as some younger, up-and-coming marques. The addition of Zodiac made perfect sense, as the company brought a dash of color to our sports watch offerings, while Urwerk, joining a few weeks later, added a bit of horological ingenuity to our line-up of brands.
Later in the year, we announced that the HODINKEE Shop was now an authorized retailer of OMEGA watches. The brand holds an exceptionally close place within the hearts – and collections – of the HODINKEE team, starting with none other than founder and CEO Ben Clymer, who was gifted an OMEGA Speedmaster MK40 by his grandfather, a watch we commemorated with a limited edition Speedmaster to celebrate our 10th anniversary in 2018. The success of that project gave us the confidence to start working closer with OMEGA, eventually resulting in a pop-up shop in SoHo and the addition of 23 new watches to the HODINKEE Shop.
We closed the year out in December with two consecutive announcements. We welcomed BVLGARI, with its record-setting Octo Finissimo collection, and Leica, the acclaimed German manufacturer of high-end cameras and best-in-class lenses, to the HODINKEE Shop.
Cameras, Straps, And Pouches
The scope of the HODINKEE Shop spreads further than just watches these days, and we released a number of other HODINKEE-branded products that came as the result of collaborative effort. While the biggest news in this field came earlier this month with the addition of Leica to the HODINKEE Shop, as well as the subsequent debut of the Leica M10-P “Ghost Edition” for HODINKEE that was inspired by the faded “ghost” bezel of a dive watch from Ben Clymer’s personal collection, there were plenty of other releases to take note of as well.
That includes the addition of three new strap ranges to the HODINKEE Shop. The Bedford, Sedona, and Barrett collections all add diversity to our longest-tenured product as we continue to build out one of our flagship offerings. Another recent addition that has proven incredibly popular in the few weeks it has been available is the Mini Leather Watch Pouches, designed specifically to protect your favorite watches with bracelets during travel or storage at home. Finally, the addition of the S.T. Dupont Ligne 2 Limited Edition for HODINKEE was a highlight for our team, as we worked with the historic company to develop a lighter that was authentic to the spirit of design and craftsmanship that we value so much.
Books have always been an intrinsic part of what the HODINKEE Shop has to offer, and we’re proud to boast one of the largest collections of horological writing for sale in the world. Our latest additions include some of our most recent in-house work, like our first official book that was published by Assouline this fall, Watches: A Guide By HODINKEE, as well as HODINKEE Magazine Volume 4 and Volume 5. We also added some heavy-hitting works of horological scholarship, with a range of Assouline’s Impossible Collection series and John Goldberger’s latest release, A Journey Into The Deep, which the HODINKEE Shop is the exclusive retailer.
